Personally, considering I am an Old Blood and I see what can happen with a virus is loose... i believe them to possibly be shape shifters. Maybe the virus attacked a few switch cells in the body and mutated them?

I am particularly fond of demons and if vampires can mutate from diseases then shouldn't there be some sort of demon?

I really doubt that it's some sort of demon, Rayna. I mean, think about it logically... The toxin isn't that strong that it could alter their chemical make up that drastically. Not without some other genetic markers. In which case, those oddities would have been documented... highly while you and I were still in Med School.

Ahh but there are mentions of demons throughout history, just as much as the old bloods. If the old bloods could exist without us getting our hands on samples of their DNA then demons could too.
A toxin based mutation would probably be a shifter though... After all... The toxin has to affect the animals at some point in a less dormant way.

Well, there are demons, then, angels. Actually, all of those options have been brought up in... basically every single mythos, from the dawn of time.
I'm kind of with Mila, in less... blunt terms. I think that it is Werewolves. It would make the most sense. And follow the cliche... Just as long as our lives don't turn into something reminiscent of Twilight, I'm fine.

Well.. it stands to reason that animals would be affected by the end of the world and mutate too.
Either a species of animal is becoming more humanlike, or some group of people is becoming more animal like.
Unless they've been here the whole time and it took the end of the world to happen for them to be noticed.
