He shouldn't be walking out to the clinic right now. He had far too much to do around the village without having to come by and see Kyla at her clinic, but then he also knew he would pay for it later if he didn't go to see her. And of course, he did want to see her.
Along the way he passed a field that was blossoming some wildflowers. He knew it would be sappy, but he also knew that Kyle loved that cheesy kind of stuff. He didn't know very many girls who didn't like that sappy kind of stuff. He looked back at the sky, knowing that he would have enough time to get to the clinic and back to the shop before the sun set but he doubted it would actually happen. Usually when Kyle had been gone for so long they would have a rather long conversation just checking up on one another and making sure that all was well in each others' worlds.
Scout chuckled to himself midway through picking some primroses and realized that if he really wanted to make her happy he might have brought her some of his makeshift brew but he resolved that he definitely didn't have enough time for that and picked three more primroses before starting again on the trail to the clinic.
The trail was open, but lined with trees and despite everything that had happened with the end of the world, he resolved to enjoy the walk over to the clinic plants and all.
His mind went momentarily back to his shop. He had been commissioned much since Kyle had left, he doubted he would get through the whole list before he and Kyle would surely have to make their way back to the house.
Scout stopped. It was very possible that they would not be alone in their walk back. Nic could be there with her right now and Scout looked down at the small bouquet of flowers and wondered if it was such a good idea after all. Looking around him, he almost wished that someone could be there to give him some advice. He cleared his throat and kept on walking, he would simply poke his head in the door before giving her the flowers to make sure that no one else would be there to poke fun at him and presume things that weren't true...
Before he knew it, the clinic was only a few yards in front of him, he smiled and walked up to the door. He sighed and apprehensively knocked on the door, hiding his flowers behind his back.

Kyle had just gotten back from dinner with Nic. It was a nice time, to say the least. She had confided in him about her new... friend that she had managed to bring back from the Red Forest. While, he wasn't jumping up and down, he took the news better than she had expected him to. He wasn't all that supportive, but he wasn't telling her that she was absolutely batshit insane. While, a part of her believed that she was a little insane for even contemplating what she had done, she knew that this was something that had to happen. This was something that needed to happen for the better of their kind. For the better of the world. She swallowed and dragged her gaze back to the stethoscope, after she had referenced something in her text book that she had laid out flat across her desk. It was going to be a long night; she knew that, now that she had plenty of information and tests at her disposal.
A few hours had came and went since she had gotten back. It was long enough time for Emile to get settled in one of the old abandoned rooms of the fire hall and long enough time for her to get a few samples from him, and to administer the first dose of the plant to the boy. That was the information that she was checking at the moment. She was thankful that no one else would be able to read the electronic hodgepodge of results that were bound to come out of the machines. She had to train herself specifically to speak medical gibberish in order to read the outcome.
There was a knock at the door. Due to it's relaxed nature, she didn't feel the dire need to throw herself at the door. When someone truly needed her help, they tended to knock in a completely different way. She took a few steps toward the door and looked out the window to see Boyscout. A wide grin came to her lips. All hard feelings about him not being there were completely forgotten. Something about seeing her best friend here made her feel that much better. All thoughts of him abandoning her were forgotten.
"Hey you!" she smirked as she opened up the door. "So, did you forget your keyfob?" she smirked, gesturing that he should come in. "You haven't knocked in... forever." she said, locking the door tightly behind them. "So..." she grinned, bouncing up and down before wrapping her arms around him. "I found it! I found the plant!"

Movement at the window caught Scout's eye as he waited at the door. He chuckled to himself but understood that in this new world, everyone had to be careful. It was second nature for just about everyone at this point but Scout still missed the days when you could leave your door unlocked and not worry about being mauled in your sleep or burgled.
He walked into the lab, the acrid smell of various chemicals filled his senses and Scout had to rub his nose initially to keep from sneezing. It was oddly bright in the lab, at least in comparison to every other building in town. It was important that it would be well lit though because of the nature of the work being done within. Scout had actually helped install the solar panels that helped to power the small building. It was something that he was rather proud of. He took a look around the lab and everything seemed to be almost as it was except this time, Kyle had shifted much throughout the lab in order to work. "No, I didn't forget the keyfob, I just thought it would be nice to knock for once since I know how you like your privacy." It felt like a new development between them. It used to be no problem that he would walk into a room with her doing... just about anything. There wasn't many secrets between them, not until the end of the world came anyway.
Scout grinned practically from ear to ear when Kyle enveloped him in a hug. "You mean you found the flimsy wildflower bouquet that I picked for you on the way here?" he teased. The pale pink flowers seemingly perked up at the sight of young woman; perhaps it was just his imagination though. He cleared his throat, "I'm only joking. What did you find Kyla? Please say it isn't some lame root that's going to save the world..." He rolled his eyes.

Kyle laughed. "What, do you have some sort of naughty mad scientist fantasy or something that you're afraid of walking in on?" she winked, giving him a teasing smirk. She laughed outright, running a hand through her hair, clearly a lot happier than she had been in a long time. It was funny to see her try and act sexy, primarily because she was one of those girls that was just perpetually adorable. It seemed as though she was incapable of truly seducing someone... Except for Prom, apparently. Although, that wasn't something that she wanted to think about at the moment. It was a fond... if not hot memory, but what came after tainted it.
When Boyscout produced the bouquet, she couldn't help but grin. She took the flowers and sniffed them, a wide smile still on her lips. "They're beautiful." she smirked before leaning over and kissing his cheek gently. "Why Boyscout, I do believe that you're going to make me blush with all of your gentlemanly ways!" she said, in an all but perfected southern drawl. It had been quite some time since she had been able to joke with him like this. It was like how they were before the end of the world... Before everything happened. And she was enjoying it immensely.
She busied herself with finding a suitable vase, as she shared the good news. She shifted a bit from side to side, wiggling her hips to a song that was playing in her head and hers alone. At his question, she made an overdramatic sigh, as though partaking in his 'frustration.' "Oh, you know me..." she began, rolling her eyes as well. She rested her hands on her hips, a smirk tugging at the corner of her lips. "You know... with the whole Doctor needs to fix every patient possible complex."
She sighed over dramatically and flopped against her desk. "But yes. I found quite a few good samples." she smiled. "The antidote is so close I can taste it! I've already been running a few tests."

Scout was so glad that he wasn't one to blush and turn funny colors because seeing Kyle tease him this way would have turned him red faster than tobasco sauce. It was nice to banter with her since he hadn't had the opportunity to do it in a while. He kind of missed having a normal friendship with Kyle and as close as the two of them had gotten to it in the past, it was never the same.
"Just because humanity is at stake, it doesn't mean that chivalry should be at stake too." He laughed. He was glad that she liked the flowers, he knew that she would. He made a mental note though to bring her some beer the next time that he came by. Not that he would probably remember. Unless he came from the stream, he usually didn't remember. Going to the clinic was generally a spur of the moment thing when it came to Scout.
A lonely beaker sat on the edge of a counter top and seemed to be the perfect solution to a missing vase. "Here," he offered, "use this. I'm sure you weren't thinking that I would bring you a bunch of flowers when you started working here." Scout thought about all of the times that he had brought flowers to Kyle. It never happened all that much. Mostly, he brought her flowers to make her feel better, to apologize, to greet her after a long absence. Like now. The last time he gave her flowers was... Prom. Something he didn't want to think about.
Scout understood the whole going the distance to help everyone. "Yeah, I definitely get the whole having to help everyone as much as possible idea. Being the only mechanic takes it's toll sometimes but I think I'm going to take on an apprentice soon because I know I won't last forever and even if I do I need help. Perhaps you might take on some help of your own? You might feel better when all is said and done." He would like for her to come home more often without being so tired. If she had some more help around the place, she might do a lot better for herself.
He watched her as she flopped in her seat. She often looked like that at the end of the day. He smiled, happy to see her again; happy and somewhat normal. "What kind of tests have you been running?" he asked.

"Chivalry dead? No. Not with you around. It's impossible for chivalry to die when you're around. You just ooze it." She teased. While the tone in her voice might have led others to believe that she was being sarcastic, she was being honest. Boyscout was insufferably chivalrous. Which... When Kyle was feeling particularly frisky, or weak, or whatever one might want to describe it as, it made it incredibly difficult. That, and well... She was afraid that if she fell right into bed with him again, that they would both end up in the same spot that they had been before, and that was not a place that she wished to revisit. "But, you helped install everything here, and I'd rather you just come right in. If there are ever to be zombies, I wouldn't put it past them to... You know, start coming through this way." she said, gesturing vaguely with her hand, clearly not content with the imagery that was coming to mind.
Boyscout found an empty beaker, and offered it as a vase. She smiled and nodded, filling it up with water. She grabbed the flowers and put them in, humming happily. She turned around, and planted yet another light kiss on Boyscout's cheek. However, she had misjudged and landed it dangerously close to the corner of his mouth. Oh well, they'd get over it. They were adults.
Kyle nodded her understanding as Boyscout made mention of the fact that he was thinking about taking on apprentices. "You should." she said, without hesitation. "For the past couple of months, we've both just gotten home, and flopped in bed. Neither of us have really had the ability to talk." she frowned, hugging herself, as though allowing those darker thoughts to take a hold for a moment. "I have Rayna for the most part. She does a good job. But, when she gets into one of her OCD fits where she has to clean everything, I tend to now want to have her around. Although, I wouldn't having her over at our house." she teased.
Inevitably, the conversation turned to where she had been, and why she had been there. The flowers that she had gathered were crucial to their kind. Now more than ever. A look of pride came to her face as she looked up at the ceiling, seemingly trying to remember all of the tests that she was running.
"Right now, I'm primarily isolating the infected gene in infected blood, and comparing the DNA post treatment with the flower, and pre." she beamed. Now, here was the true question - where in the hell did she get infected blood?

For a moment, Scout tried to think of what oozing chivalry would look like. He imagined himself oozing some mystical golden goop from his ears and nose and it made him chuckle a little bit. He had the weirdest imagination sometimes. Too bad he didn't have a suit of armor to tie the whole picture. "Um, yeah thanks. At least you aren't too much of a feminist to refuse chivalry. I think that bothers me more than anything."
He took a long look at the flowers in the beaker. There was something about them that made him happy. He liked it that Kyle had loved them so much and for some reason, finding some second-rate vase was almost a perfect picture of Kyle. Smart but still feminine. He might have told her that, except that he thought it would only embarrass her and there was something about it that he liked to keep private. Perhaps he didn't want for Kyle to know what he thought about her all the time. It was more likely that it was safer for the two of them that way.
Scout cleared his throat, "Uh, yeah, I was thinking about teaching Ronnie some stuff but she's so caught up with her tech work that I don't think she'd be able to handle it all. Don't get me wrong, she's definitely smart enough for the job and she'd probably benefit from not coming by for consultations on her own work all the time, but overall, I think we would be much better off with some new blood. I think might just ask around town until I'm able to come up with something." He thought about this for a moment. He wasn't sure who he would begin to ask. Everyone around town had taken their share of staying busy in some sort of practical way. Finding a young teenager might be his best bet but none immediately came to mind. Ah well, so many people were coming to Rustboro nowadays it would most likely only be a matter of time before he found someone.
Scout blinked and looked up at Kyle. "Infected blood?" he asked. "Where did you get infected blood? You didn't get into a scathe with some zombies did you? Please tell me that you didn't get hurt or anything." He was alarmed, but remained calm. If Kyle hadn't said anything by this point, she was probably fine but sometimes Kyle didn't tell him everything and he hoped that this wasn't the case.

"I wouldn't refuse anything if it was from you, baby." she grinned, giving him a wink. "It's nice to see that chivalry isn't dead, in all honesty." she said, shrugging a bit as she spoke. "I mean... I am a feminist, but I think that... Relationships should be give and take. Sometimes, the male does all the wooing, sometimes a girl does all the wooing." she shrugged. "But, then again, I haven't really ever had a relationship that worked, so maybe, the guy is supposed to do everything... Or I'm just well on my way to spinsterhood. Whichever." she laughed, not quite catching the fact that her self depricating humor might just sting Boyscout as well.
Wrapping her arms around herself, she sighed contentedly and looked down at the flowers. Boyscout made it a habit to get her flowers as often as he could... Generally for the things that would matter. Like, coming home for example. It was a custom that she was used to, but never stopped appreciating. It was sweet. A reminder that he was still the nice guy that she met when they were younger... Not that that was ever truly in question. Only in her own mind did she see him as a jerk... When she was mad at him. If she would dig deep enough, she would realize that she was mad at him for not wearing protection... For getting her pregnant... And not having the strength to chase her down when she was too weak to be around him. But, those were all things that she couldn't blame him for. Not logically. So, she pushed those thoughts and those feelings to the back of her mind. There was no point in talking with him about something that couldn't be fixed... Let alone something like this. At least, in her mind.
"Who is Ronnie?" she asked flippantly as she turned around to start digging for some things through her desk. She was looking for sugar packets to stir into the water, so that the flowers didn't die. "I think you can find someone. I mean, I know that there are a lot of Raiders with great mechanic skills. I just don't know if you'd want them floating around the garage." she teased, standing up on her tip toes as she dug through her desk, not quite realizing that she was all but wagging her bottom in front of him.
"No. No." she said, feeling the panic rising in her. Unfortunately for Kyle, she really had no poker face. So, when he asked where she had gotten the infected blood from, her cheeks turned bright red. "I didn't get hurt. Don't worry." She didn't like where the conversation was going. She wouldn't be able to lie to him. Not right now... Not like this. "I got it from a moderately infected zombie." she said, carefully, biting her lower lip. She didn't want to admit that Emile was there, and that he was just... hanging out in one of the rooms in the back. Yeah, that wouldn't look bad... at all...

Scout smirked. He thought it was funny the way that she brought up relationships. It wasn't something that they generally talked about. He knew that Kyle wanted a real relationship with someone but Scout was getting the feeling that it wouldn't be with him. Not that he had any experience himself with relationships. He was always too busy having a good time with Kyle to even think of dating anyone else. "Yeah, relationships are funny like that I suppose." He had no more to say about it and he wasn't sure if he wanted to say any more about it.
The strange kiss made him take an involuntary step backwards. He smiled, but he didn't know what to think about it. She was a very physical person, which he was used to, but her kissing him he could never really get his head around it. At least, it wasn't like he was from France or anything. Sometimes he wondered about it but he never brought it up. Just like so many other things.
"Oh, Ronnie is just a new girl in town who does a lot of tech work. She's not used to mechanics and they tend to go hand in hand so sometimes she stops by for a consultation and vice versa. She's pretty handy to have in town. Usually I have to bore through a thousand books but now I don't have to do that anymore. It's rather nice." He noticed her rather nicely shaped watermelon in front of him but he suddenly found interest in some uninterpretable paperwork sitting in front of him. "Yeah, I don't think anyone would trust me with a Raider apprentice." He chuckled nervously.
Scout's brow creased. She was talking way too much and that never made for good conversation afterward. He was afraid to ask the following question, but he felt like it might be necessary. "And... How did you get blood from an infected zombie?"

"Relationships are overrated." she said quietly. She caught herself, and gave him a sheepish grin. "I mean... The title part of it is. People could be in relationships for years without ever putting a name on it... I just think that... When you care about someone that should be enough." She paused and bit her lip, wondering what it was that she was implying. Now, Kyle was damn good at deluding herself. Far better than she had any right to be, in fact. But, she knew that she could never pursue anything with Boyscout. She would destroy him, or he would destroy her. And she knew that neither of them could have that sitting on their shoulders. That doesn't mean I don't want one with him, though. She pushed the careless thought aside, instead, focusing on the flowers that he had given her.
And then it dawned on her, that she had never really... thanked him for the sweet things that he did. What better time to start then now, right? She held out her hands as she leaned against the desk. "Come here?" she asked, giving him one of those smiles that said that she wanted to say something.
She was feeling a little gooby. After all, she didn't get to see him all that often, and she loved it when he paid attention to her. Especially late at night when he was asleep, and he'd wrap his arms around her while she was still awake... But those were thoughts that she didn't want to have. She swallowed and nodded. "Oh..." was all she could muster. She paused, still leaned over her desk. "Sounds like Boyscout has a little crush..." She willed it to not be so, even though the tone in her voice was just as flippant as it had been in the beginning.
Typical Kyle had to put her foot in her mouth. She... was going to answer him honestly, but, she figured that it would be best if she skimped on a few of the details. you know, just for the sake of Boyscout's piece of mind. "Uhm..." she blushed. "He offered it to me?" Smooth, Kyle. Smooth.

As much as he didn't want to agree with her, he couldn't agree with her. He never believed that relationships were overrated. In fact, he believed that it was something that was probably the most important thing in the while world at this point. He chewed his lip for a moment, wondering what he might say in reply. "I'd have to say that labeling things sometimes is overrated, but all in all, I think that relationships and love in general is what keeps us... human." He shrugged. It was probably the most innocent way that he could put his stance without adding more tension to the room that was impossible to address.
He sighed with relief when she offered a hug. He walked over and embraced her again. It was a good way for them both to shrug off the awkwardness of the previous conversation. Scout was afraid to talk about feelings. To think of what might happen if it was brought up was something that he didn't want to imagine.
A crush? The thought made him scoff although he wasn't sure if it was... completely untrue? "Yeah, sure. I have a crush. With all the time that I have." he said rolling his eyes. He felt so childish. A habit around Kyle he supposed. "I mean, Ronnie is nice and everything but I've heard her mention some other guy so I haven't thought about her that way." Which was more or less true.
Alarm rose in even higher in Scouts mind. What was it she was doing in the forest? He was beginning to think that this was all a really bad conversation that they were about to have. Again, he found himself having to ask a necessary tough question. "And... How did you get him to voluntarily give you his blood?"

"I completely agree with you on that." she said, looking up at him. "I do believe that relationships are... a beautiful thing, and that having someone to hold you, kiss you... say that they love you. It's wonderful, yes. But what I don't agree with is the whole matter of titles. As soon as you put a label on something there is pressure... To act a certain way, to work toward a certain goal... I just... To me, personally, I don't think that I'd do very well in a relationship that there was strain on those kinds of things. I don't hide when I love someone." She blushed and looked to the side. Just... what exactly was she saying?
When Boyscout came up to her, and wrapped his arms around her, she pressed his face into his chest, her arms wrapping around his waist. "I know I don't say this nearly enough, but I love you, Michael." she said, knowing that using his real name would prove that she was being sincere. "And you're entirely too sweet. Thank you, so much for being the best friend a girl could ever ask for." she smiled and pulled back, looking up at him. She leaned up, and planted a light kiss on his chin. Words couldn't express just how much he did mean to her.
But, just as she was getting accustomed to the butterfly feeling in her stomach once again, she was slapped in the face with reality. This wasn't the perfect world where they could get along, and where they could possible get together, and live the life that both of their parents wished that they would share together. This was the real world... Where she was never gonna be good enough for a guy like Scout. She nodded. "Uh-huh. Sure, Boyscout." she said, her tone taking a far harsher tone than she wanted it to.
It seemed as though they were determined to fuck up. Both, one after the other. While Boyscout wasn't technically fucking up, Kyle wanted to believe that he was... But, now was not the time to think of that. She needed to think of a damn good explanation. "I uh..." she took a deep breath. "He was attacked by a rabid wolf, and I patched him up." she said, a great deal quicker than she had any right to.

Scout took a deep breath and thought about what it was that Kyle was really saying. She obviously had something... or someone on her mind but whether or not Scout was on her mind, he had no way of knowing. Lately he felt as though their conversations had become more and more surface level than they used to be so Scout wasn't sure what to think. He had things of his own that he was hiding, like his apartment on the second level of his shop for instance. It wasn't that he wanted to get away from Kyle, but he couldn't stand to be around Sammy AND Nicholae AND Kyle. It was just too much going on for him and lately he felt as though he might be better off living on his own. Of course, if Kyle wanted to go with him... "Yeah, but anything worth having is worth fighting for. If you didn't have pressure on a relationship than perhaps it's not worth having? I dunno. I just think it's good to have commitments, to have people around you who are willing to work through things with you. I would expect more from people who love me than those who don't know me that just makes sense." He was trying very hard to keep the conversation observational as opposed to personal.
Kyle wasn't helping his endeavors at all. Not only did she say that she loved him, but he was also pretty sure that it was in a completely platonic way. "I love you too." he replied. He felt so empty saying it. "You've always... been there for me and it's meant a lot." He could have kicked himself at that point. He was sure that he loved her but after she hadn't been there for the most pivotal pain in his life, he wasn't sure that she had been there when he really needed her. And the wasn't so sure if she really loved him after all. He did his best to hide his pain and in all honesty, he was really good at it. His chin burned where she kissed it and for a moment he wished that they could kiss for real. He looked down at her and for the first time he realized what an intimate position that they were in. Carefully, he leaned down and kissed her on the cheek feeling the anticipation to her reaction as well as the awkwardness of the situation.
In the scope of everything else that was said in this conversation, a little teasing about a "crush" or whatever didn't seem so bad. He just smiled and shook his head. "Oh yeah? And you don't have a crush either?" he teased.
His eyes widened when he heard that she had patched up an infected zombie. "What?" he asked. "You patched up someone who was infected? Just how infected was he anyway? And what did you do with him after you patched him up?"

"I don't think..." she paused, and took a deep breath, her eyes roaming up to the cavernous ceiling. "I don't think you're getting what I'm saying." She said, slowly bringing her gaze back down to his, looking his dead in the eye. "If one of the parties wants a title, then it's okay to push, if not ask for it. But, as far as I see it, they're not necessary for a legitimate relationship to... Be a relationship. If that makes any sense?" She blushed and shook her head, uncertain of who at this point she was talking about... Nicolae or Boyscout. "Never mind." she laughed as she blushed. "It's not important. Not like I'm going to be asked any time soon." she drawled, turning her attention back to finding a vase for the flowers he had brought her.
Kyle had originally intended to just be sweet to him, but he had kissed her cheek, and... She looked up at him, her breath catching in her chest. It seemed more like she was a deer in the headlights than anything. Her eyes flitted down to his lips for a moment. She knew what she wanted. She wasn't that dense. But, she quickly looked away. She wanted to kiss him, just to remember what it was like. To pretend for a bit that things were back to normal. But she would never admit that to herself, let alone to him. Christ, he probably didn't even want her anymore. Just her luck.
How could such a perfect moment be ruined? And let alone by another woman? She was so angry, she could shit. Of course, she wouldn't actually, because it was physically impossible to sporadically shit, but she kind of wanted to. And you don't have a crush either? He asked. She sighed and shook her head. Her hands were then firmly planted on the desk, as her eyes rested on some place distant. "Yeah, I do. But I'm fairly certain it's unrequited." The nagging voice in the back of her head was telling her that it was 'Scout that she was thinking about. But everything that was spiteful in her, which was a lot of her, was telling her to tell him Nicolae. But instead, she just let the uncertain silence hang between them. The cold, sad tone in her voice seemed to echo throughout the hall, pulsating in her head, making her relive those thoughts over and over again.
Well, while they were on a gigantic shit roll, she might as well just give it one last final push before it began sliding rapidly down the cliff into a full blown argument. "I patched a Moderately infected Zombie boy. He helped me find the flowers. And now he's locked up in one of the back rooms as a test subject." she said, staring up at him defiantly as though asking, "Are you fucking happy now?"

Scout nodded and tried to smile, but somehow couldn't. He took sudden interest in the oil that was smudged in all the little valleys of his fingers. "Yeah, that makes sense." he mumbled. I guess the only thing is, I once knew someone who didn't label a relationship and it fell through because some shit happened to the two of them and because they didn't put a label on it she just split and didn't feel any obligation to own up to or talk about anything. He didn't say that though. " I guess I just think that labels are important at least in the sense that it creates a secure way for people to be on the same page of a relationship you know? It's like you understand the expectations of the other person." Scout was so old fashioned and Kyle was so not old fashioned that it was more than frustrating. "Do you want someone to ask you?" He held his breath and waited for an answer. What was he doing anyway?
He caught her looking down his face and for a moment he might have sworn that she looked at his lips. Did she really want to kiss him after all? Maybe he shouldn't be so shocked about it after all. He looked down at her and waited to see if she might look back up at him or not. His pulsed raced and they were so close he could have sworn that she could feel it herself.
"You? Unrequited love? I could hardly believe that you of all people could have an unrequited love. I mean seriously, how many men ogle you on a daily basis?" he chuckled. He honestly thought that it was impossible for any man not to be at least a little in love with her. He also wondered who it might be that was in love with her. He didn't know what would be worse, that it was him giving off the wrong vibe or that she was in love with someone else.
First, he was shocked and he didn't know how long it took for that to wear off but he was certain it took a good minute. "What... the... Hell?" he asked slowly. "You mean to tell me that you have an infected boy in your clinic and you're here all alone working on him? Do you have any idea how stupid that is? What if he gets out?"
